Student Safety – The Bus Driver’s #1 Priority

The school bus driver’s number one priority is the safety of your child. In order to drive safely and efficiently at all times, it is important that every student behaves in a responsible manner on the bus. Please reinforce the importance of bus safety with your child by reviewing the following bus safety rules.

While waiting for the bus:

  • Arrive at your bus stop five minutes before your designated stop time.

  • Wait for the bus in a safe, visible area off the road.

  • If the bus stop is at your house – you should be outside waiting for the bus.

Boarding the bus:

  • Wait for the bus to come to a complete stop.

  • Wait for the driver to signal you to board the bus.

  • Look both ways before crossing the road.

  • Use the handrail when entering the bus.

  • Go directly to your seat and sit down.

  • Follow the driver’s directions at all times.

While on the bus:

  • Remain seated while the bus is in motion.

  • Keep the aisle clear at all times so the driver can see out the back door.

  • Keep your hands and head inside the bus at all times.

  • Do not throw objects on the bus or out the windows.

  • Drinking and eating are not allowed on the bus.

  • Never scream or shout. Talk to your friends in a quiet voice.

  • Fighting and inappropriate language are not permitted on the bus.

  • Behave on the bus the same way you do in the classroom.

Leaving the bus:

  • Remain seated until the bus comes to a complete stop.

  • Use the handrail when exiting the bus.

  • Make sure you look down the right hand side of the bus before exiting.

  • Look for the driver’s signal before crossing the road. Watch for traffic: look left, right and then left again to make sure all traffic has stopped.

  • Never get off the bus at another stop without parent’s permission.

  • Never stop to pick up an item that you have dropped near the bus or in the street.

  • Go directly home. Never talk to strangers.

To further promote the safety of our students, video cameras may be used to monitor student’s behavior on the school bus.
