Down At The Farm

PARP 2009

Dear Parents,                                                                March 5, 2009

Each year the PTSA sponsors a three week reading program called PARP (Parents As Reading Partners).  This year the program will run from March 6, 2009 through March 27, 2009 .  The theme is “Down At The Farm”.  The program will be followed by an assembly with Daisy the Reading Pig on April 3, 2009 .   Students in grades K – 4 will bring home a shape with the days of the week on it.  We suggest you read with your child 5 out of 7 days for at least 15 minutes.  Record the minutes per day you read together and initial on the shape.  Each Friday in March (March 13, March 20 and March 27) the students should bring the shape into school.  The teacher will collect the shapes and the PTSA will tally the minutes.  The minutes will be tallied by classroom and reported on a silo to be hung up on the entrance wall in the Elementary School for all to see.  Students will receive a small prize for their hard work throughout the week.

This year we are extending the program to include pre-school aged and younger children to make this event community-wide.  There will be sign up sheets located at the Greenwood Lake Public Library each week.  Parents should record their younger children’s reading minutes on these sheets by Friday each week.  These sheets will be collected from the Library and added to a silo labeled “Community.”

If the children at the Elementary School read at least 40,000 minutes (about 8.8 minutes per day for 15 days) by the end of the three weeks, Mrs. Shea, the Elementary School Principal, will kiss Daisy the reading pig. The class that reads the most minutes will win a visit by Daisy and watch their teacher kiss the pig. Additionally, if the “Community” (including the Elementary School children and the younger children) reach a goal of 50,000 minutes, Mayor Barbara Moore has agreed to kiss Daisy.

Thank you,

Colleen M. Hallinan
